Hangang Seoul Half Marathon: Complete Guide for International Runners

Update: The 3rd Hangang Seoul Half Marathon took place on August 30, 2026, and registration for that edition has closed. This guide stays online as a reference for runners planning ahead, and we will update it when the organizer announces the next edition. Please check the official website for the latest schedule.

🏃 Running Along the Han River in the Heart of Seoul

There is something special about running beside the Han River, the waterway that runs through the middle of Seoul and shapes daily life in the capital. The Hangang Seoul Half Marathon takes that everyday scenery and turns it into a race morning: thousands of runners on wide riverside paths, the city skyline behind them, and Yeouido’s towers on the horizon.

The race offers a half marathon, a 10K and a 5K, all starting and finishing at the same place, so runners of very different levels can share one event. For an international runner, it is one of the easier ways to experience a Korean race. The venue is right in Seoul, it can be reached by subway, and the flat riverside paths suit runners who want a fast, uncomplicated course.

📍 Event Overview (2026 Edition)

  • Event name: 3rd Hangang Seoul Half Marathon
  • Date: Sunday, August 30, 2026. The race started at 8:00 AM.
  • Start and finish: Yeouido Hangang Park, Mulbit Square (Yeouido, Seoul)
  • Distances: Half marathon (21.0975 km), 10K and 5K
  • Registration period: From mid-May until August 23, 2026, first come, first served. Registration could close early once the participant limit was reached.
  • Organizer: Korea Success Era Association (사단법인 국민성공시대), as listed on public event pages

Late August is the hottest and most humid part of the Korean summer, so an 8:00 AM start matters. The early hour keeps the worst of the midday heat away, but you should still plan for a warm, humid race. Arrive early, because assembly and baggage drop take time even at a well-organized event.

🗺️ Course Analysis and Difficulty

The start and finish are both at Mulbit Square in Yeouido Hangang Park, and the route follows the paved riverside paths. The paths are wide, flat and almost free of climbs, which is why many runners choose this race for a personal best.

The official site notes that the start and finish location does not change, but the race route itself can be adjusted from year to year. Treat any description of the exact turnaround points as tentative and check the official course map for the edition you plan to run.

📊 How Hard Is It?

  • Terrain: Flat and paved, with very little elevation change.
  • Main challenge: Heat, humidity and sun exposure. The riverside path has little shade, so weather, not hills, is what slows most runners.
  • Best for: First-time half marathoners, runners chasing a fast time, and visitors who want an easy introduction to racing in Korea.

💰 Entry Fees

DistanceEntry fee (2026)
Half marathon50,000 KRW
10K50,000 KRW
5K50,000 KRW

All three distances cost the same, so there is no price reason to pick a shorter race. Choose the distance that fits your training. If you register through our support service, the total also includes our agency fee and the PayPal charge. You can find the full breakdown on our About page.

🎁 Race Package

Participants in the 2026 edition received a race package that typically included:

  • A commemorative T-shirt (sizes may be assigned at random, so bring a spare shirt if you are particular about fit)
  • A finisher medal
  • A finish-time certificate for half marathon and 10K participants
  • Snacks and drinks after the race
  • Baggage storage during the race
  • Lucky draw prizes such as household items, knee braces and running belts. Earlier editions also included coffee-shop vouchers.

Package contents change from year to year, so confirm the list on the official site once the next edition is announced.

📝 How to Register as an International Runner

The organizer’s registration page is in Korean, and payment is designed for people living in Korea. If you would like help, Sports Event Korea can register you and let you pay in US dollars through PayPal. Send a request through the registration support form and we will reply by email with your fee and payment instructions.

Because this race is popular and registration is first come, first served, do not wait for the last week. Registration for the 2026 edition required signing up online in advance, and on-site registration was not available.

✈️ How to Get There

The venue, Yeouido Hangang Park Mulbit Square, is within walking distance of Yeouinaru Station on Seoul Subway Line 5.

From Incheon International Airport

  1. Take the AREX all-stop train from Incheon Airport to Gongdeok Station. The trip takes roughly an hour. The AREX Express runs non-stop to Seoul Station and does not stop at Gongdeok, so choose the all-stop train.
  2. At Gongdeok Station, transfer to Line 5 in the direction of Banghwa and ride two stops to Yeouinaru Station.
  3. Walk to Yeouido Hangang Park, Mulbit Square. Follow the other runners on race morning.

Including the transfer, the whole trip from the airport takes about 70 minutes. Hongik University Station, which is also on the AREX line, is on Line 2 and not Line 5, so do not transfer there for Yeouinaru.

If you take a taxi, show the driver the destination in Korean: 여의도 한강공원 물빛광장. On race morning, public transport is the more reliable choice because roads around Yeouido Hangang Park can be congested.

🛡️ Expert Advice: Preparing for a Hot Summer Race

💧 Hydration

Start drinking well before race day, not just at the start line. In the two days before the race, sip water regularly and include some salty food. During the race, take small sips at every aid station instead of waiting until you feel thirsty. If you sweat heavily, consider carrying a small bottle or wearing a light hydration vest.

☀️ Sun and Heat Protection

The riverside path is open and offers little shade. Apply water-resistant sunscreen about 30 minutes before the start, and wear a light cap and breathable, moisture-wicking clothing.

👟 Shoes

Wear road running shoes you have already trained in. Do not try new shoes on race day, because blisters are far more likely in hot, humid conditions. A flat course like this suits lightweight, well-cushioned shoes.

🧘 Stretching and Injury Prevention

Before the start, do a few minutes of dynamic movement, such as leg swings, hip circles and easy jogging. Keep the long static stretches for after you finish. Start the half marathon a little slower than your target pace. On a flat course it is easy to go out too fast, and the heat will punish that mistake in the second half.

🍽️ Race-Week Food

The night before, choose simple, familiar carbohydrates such as rice, noodles or a plain rice dish, and go easy on very spicy food if your stomach is sensitive. After the race, a warm, salty meal helps you recover. Many Korean runners choose samgyetang, a ginseng chicken soup, in summer.

❓ Frequently Asked Questions

Is this race suitable for beginners?

Yes. The course is flat, and the 5K and 10K distances give first-time racers an easy way to join a large event.

Can I register on the day of the race?

What happens if it rains?

Korean road races normally go ahead in light or moderate rain. In severe weather the organizer announces any changes on its official channels, so check them the day before.
